Japan Reviews Restrictions on Beef Imports

Japan has decided to review its restrictions on beef imports from the US. The rule was put in place in 2005 and restricts the import of beef from cattle over 20 months of age.

(Reuters) – The United States welcomed Japan’s review of meat import rules that bar import of beef from cattle over 20 months of age, imposed as mad-cow safeguard, an Agriculture Department spokesman said on Tuesday.

The rule, in place since 2005, greatly reduced U.S. beef sales to Japan. The Japanese government announced on Tuesday it would review the restrictions. For years, the United States said its feed and meat processing rules assure its beef is safe to eat.

Owner of Morton’s Dies at 65

Allen Bernstein, the owner of the famous Morton’s of Chicago, has passed away at the age of 65. Mr. Bernstein is responsible for helping to make Morton’s into a popular and upscale steakhouse chain.

Allen J. Bernstein, who showed that high-end restaurants can succeed as chains by expanding Morton’s of Chicago from nine steakhouses in 1989 to 69 worldwide in 2006, has died. He was 65.

He died on Nov. 1 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, after an extended illness, according to Castle Harlan Inc., a New York-based private-equity firm that backed his ventures. He was a resident of Manhasset.

Once described by Nation’s Restaurant News as “a prolific deal-maker,” Bernstein wrote his college thesis on restaurant branding and then made a career of it.
